China Scholarship Council
(CSC) is the main body for organising scholarships at Chinese universities.
Types of scholarship
Chinese Government Scholarships are offered by the Ministry of Education (MOE) to provide full and partial scholarships to international students. Degree courses at Shanghai Jiao Tong University that are eligible for Chinese Government Scholarships can be found here.
Applications for scholarships can be made to the Chinese Embassy between January and April every year. Refer to the CSC website for more detailed information. Online application is available here .
Distinguished Chinese Students Scholarships are offered by the MOE to international students who continue their Master or Doctoral studies at one of the designated Chinese higher-education institutes.
China/UNESCO, the Great Wall Fellowship. These are offered by the MOE to students and scholars recommended by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). The study programme must be delivered in English and the programme length is normally up to one year (though extension is possible subject to approval).
Applications should be made to UNESCO UK in the UK between January and April each year.
Shanghai Government Scholarships are offered by the Municipal Government of Shanghai to encourage international students to study degree programmes in the Chinese higher-education institutes in Shanghai. Candidates must not receive any other Chinese government scholarships at the time of application.
Applications will be reviewed and submitted by Jiao Tong University.
LiYuan – Shen Yudu Scholarship. This scholarship may be offered by Shanghai Jiao Tong University to international students who do not receive any other Chinese government scholarship. Candidates are eligible to apply from the second semester of language study, and from the second year of degree study.
Applications are evaluated in the middle of May every year by the university's appraisal group.
Confucius Institute Scholarship. This scholarship is offered by Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters to encourage international students and language teachers to study Chinese language and culture in China. The professional teaching qualification of MA in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL) is supported by this scholarship.
Applicants should register a personal account at the Confucius Institute Scholarship website (in Chinese) and download the application form. Applications should be sent to the Confucius Institutes that is located nearest to you, or to the Education and Culture Office within the Chinese Embassy in the UK.
