About Shanghai Jiao Tong University
Shanghai Jiao Tong University is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in China. It was established as Nan Yang Public School in 1896 during the Qing Dynasty. Originally it was devoted to producing the top talent for China in the disciplines of politics, law and business. This remit has extended over the years in line with China's economic development to include science, high technology and engineering. The school became a university in 1921.
Many famous scientists and politicians in China have graduated from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, including former President of the People's Republic of China, Jiang Zemin.
With a vision of becoming a comprehensive and research-based international university, the contemporary Shanghai Jiao Tong now covers disciplines including science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, literature, law and management. A large number of research and development institutions and hospitals are also attached to the university.
Shanghai Jiao Tong University was among the top100 higher-education institutes chosen for National Project 211 in 1995.
